It bugs me that I can’t find any mention of “Linux” on the #Ubuntu web site. We must educate users and start calling it Linux/Ubuntu :)
-
@sazius I was always irked at how Consumer Reports never mentioned Linux, even when reviewing netbooks, and always showed it in a poor light
-
Yep, or the number of people who are suprised when I tell them that Android is Linux. Sigh…
-
@sazius Totally. Will only get worse w/GoogleOS, I predict.
-
Hence, we need to take a hint from @rms and start talking about GoogleOS/Linux or Ubuntu/GNU/Linux etc… :-)
-
@sazius it’s been like that for at least 2 yrs. When I first started using Linux, it was “Ubuntu: Linux for Human Beings” I think.
-
I can understand that they don’t want to put “boring technical details” up front to consumers, but at least mention it somewhere.
-
Anyhow, I’m going to call it Ubuntu/Linux from now on ;-)
-
@sazius there’s “boring technical details” & there’s the entire foundation of the OS. A detail would be kernel version number, e.g. :)
-
@sazius that’s the right thing to do, or else just never mention it again. :P
-
Well, I’m sure most Mac users don’t know what kernel their OS is running on :-)
-
@sazius yes true for probably 99% of ‘em. Most Ubuntu users used to know but I think their goal now is to make them forget.
-
True & sad. Ubuntu is great for drawing in a lot of people to free sw, but also a lot of people have then become part of larger community.
-
That would be very Lovecraftian: The Linux Distribution Not To Be Named.
-
@sazius Ubuntumort
-
I prefer literary references from the 1920’s :-)
-
@sazius I’ve never read Lovecraft. \o/
-
Oh noes! I do like Lovecraft myself though, but he has a bad rep because of all the clichés and bad pastishes made later :-)
-
I like the “scifi horror”, where the horror isn’t something supernatural but humanity’s insignificance in the cosmos :-)
-
I also like his descriptions of New England. I’d love to visit Providence etc some day and see if it looks as nice as it sounds :-)
-
@jonkulp you need to fix that, yesterday
-
@sazius I checked a collection of his stories out of the library but didn’t get to it in time & had to return it.
-
Most of them are public domain on the interwebs,if you don’t mind reading from a computer/tablet/ebook http://hplovecraft.com/writings/texts/
-
@sazius I’ll put a few on my phone. :)
-
Yay :-) “The Call of Cthulhu” is the most famous, so probably a good starting point. For “cosmic horror” nothing beats “Colour Out of Space”.
-
@sazius ok that one is on my phone now.
-
@jonkulp @sazius “The call of Cthulhu” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aHyy4a4SVa0
-
Yeah, that’s a great song :-)

When I first saw you dented a youtube link, I thought for sure it must be this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DsgZ4JXXB8
